General Speaking Tests

The Speaking Test is designed to evaluate your ability to communicate effectively in spoken English. It is conducted as a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner and lasts between 11 and 14 minutes. The test is divided into three parts:

  • Part 1: Introduction and Interview – You’ll answer questions about yourself, your home, work, studies, and interests.
  • Part 2: Long Turn – You’ll be given a task card with a topic and have 1 minute to prepare, then speak for up to 2 minutes on the topic.
  • Part 3: Discussion – You’ll engage in a more in-depth conversation with the examiner about issues related to the topic in Part 2.

The test assesses four key criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource (vocabulary), Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation.

The Speaking Test is essential for individuals who plan to study, work, or immigrate to English-speaking countries like Canada. A strong score in speaking is often required for immigration pathways such as Express Entry, study permits, or professional certification. Many Canadian pre-arrival and settlement programs offer speaking practice and preparation resources to help newcomers build confidence and perform successfully in real-life communication.
