General Listening Tests

The General Listening Test is designed to evaluate your ability to understand spoken English in everyday social and workplace contexts. The test consists of four audio recordings, including conversations and monologues with a variety of English accents. You will listen to each recording only once and answer a total of 40 questions within 30 minutes.

The recordings include:

  • A conversation in a social setting (e.g., booking a service).
  • A monologue about everyday topics (e.g., a speech or public announcement).
  • A conversation in a training or workplace context.
  • A monologue on a more complex topic, such as a presentation or lecture.

The questions assess your ability to understand the main ideas, specific information, opinions, and attitudes of speakers, as well as the ability to follow the development of ideas.

This test is especially relevant for individuals preparing to work, settle, or train in English-speaking environments, including those applying for immigration to Canada under programs like Express Entry or Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). Many pre-arrival and settlement programs in Canada offer listening practice and test preparation support to help newcomers succeed and build strong communication skills.
