The Academic Listening Tests are designed to evaluate a candidate’s ability to understand spoken English in academic and professional contexts. The test consists of four recordings featuring a range of accents and speaking styles, including conversations and monologues set in educational or training environments. Candidates listen to the recordings only once and answer 40 questions within approximately 30 minutes. Question types include multiple choice, matching, sentence completion, labeling diagrams, and short-answer questions. The test measures a range of listening skills, such as understanding main ideas, identifying specific factual information, recognizing opinions and attitudes, and following the development of an argument.
Academic Listening is a crucial skill for individuals planning to study or work in English-speaking environments, including those applying through Canada’s immigration pathways such as study permits, Express Entry, or professional licensing programs. Many Canadian pre-arrival and settlement services provide language training and test preparation support to help newcomers succeed in meeting language requirements and integrating effectively into academic or workplace settings.
