The Academic Writing Tests are designed to assess a candidate’s ability to write clearly, appropriately, and accurately in an academic context. The test includes two tasks that must be completed in 60 minutes.
- Task 1 requires test-takers to describe, summarize, or explain visual information such as graphs, charts, tables, or diagrams in their own words.
- Task 2 asks candidates to respond to a point of view, argument, or problem by writing an essay that presents and justifies an opinion or solution.
The writing tasks are evaluated on four criteria: Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
Academic Writing is essential for students aiming to study at the undergraduate or postgraduate level, as well as for professionals seeking licensing or certification in Canada. Many Canadian immigration programs, including Express Entry and study permits, require proof of English writing proficiency. Pre-arrival and settlement support programs across Canada often offer test preparation services to help newcomers meet these requirements and succeed in academic or professional settings.
